A 32-year-old social media personality from Hong Kong died Saturday after she fell from the edge of a waterfall while trying to take a photo.
Instagram star Sofia Cheung was attempting to take a selfie at the edge of a waterfall during a visit to Ha Pak Lai park when she lost her footing and fell into the 16-foot pool below, the New York Post reported.
Three friends who had accompanied Cheung to the park called emergency services following the fall, and she was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival, according to The Sun.
Cheung's last post on her Instagram account — which had amassed close to 8,500 followers as of writing — showed her posing at a beach while holding a boogie board.
"Better days are coming. They are called: Saturday and Sunday," Cheung's caption read.
Fans and Instagram users left messages on the post following the incident.
"Don't wanna believe this happened to you," one user wrote.
"I thought better days are coming," another said, in reference to the post's caption.
A similar incident occurred nearly four months ago in Brazil when two friends plunged to their deaths down a waterwall after one of them slipped on the edge while trying to take a selfie.
Fernando Danziger, 31, and Any Duarte, 23, fell around 138 feet down the Chicao Waterfall in the southern Brazilian municipality of Faxinal on March 14.
According to the victims' friends, Duarte attempted to take a selfie with her mobile phone while standing close to the edge of the waterfall. She, however, slipped and ended up falling.
Danziger, who tried to catch Duarte, fell as well, and both were killed upon impact.
Emergency services were called to the scene following the fall, but the two were dead by the time they had arrived.
The tourist board intends to expropriate the private land on which Chicao Waterfall and another waterfall are located in order to make safety improvements.
