On Oct. 11, females around the world celebrate the International Day of the Girl by uplifting girls and protecting their dreams.

On Dec. 19, 2011, United Nations General Assembly declared that Oct. 11 would be recognized as the International Day of the Girl. The United Nations placed recognized the holiday in an effort to bring attention to the challenges that girls face and to empower them to overcome those obstacles.

Each year, a theme is chosen to tackle specific issues that plague girls around the world.

“This year, under the theme, ‘My voice, our equal future,’ let’s seize the opportunity to reimagine a better world inspired by adolescent girls – energized and recognized, counted and invested in,” the UN website states.

For 2020, the UN has placed a spotlight on the demands for girls to acquire new skills that will benefit them in whatever future they choose, as well as, encouraging them to become a generation of activists that advocate for social change.

This year’s theme will also focus on the need for girls to live in environments that are free from gender-based violence, harmful practices, and AIDS/HIV.

The 2020 celebration of the girl-themed holiday also marks 25 years since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. The conference acted as a progressive movement in advancing the rights and empowering girls and women around the world.
