  • The horror-pic stars Elisabeth Moss in the lead role

“The Invisible Man” took the box office by storm by accumulating $29 million during its opening weekend, which is approximately $5-$6 million more than its previously forecasted figures.

Beating the expectations, the film starring Elisabeth Moss in the lead role earned almost four times more than its production budget of $7 million in the first three days of its release, according to the Hollywood Reporter, and it gave a massive boost to Universal Studios, which produced the movie. The film, which is the first movie in Universal’s “Dark Universe” since 2017’s “The Mummy,” has been getting a lot of praise from the critics as well as audiences.

The film dominated the international markets as well and earned $20.2 million during the opening weekend, taking its three-day total to $49.2 million. The film was number one in South Korea, which is quite a feat considering the fact the people are not going out in large numbers due to the spread of the life-threatening coronavirus.

Domestically, the movie had the biggest opening weekend for a horror film since September last year. “It: Chapter Two” earned a whopping $91 million in the first three days of its release.

Talking about the film’s success, Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst told Variety that Universal made a smart move by going to Blumhouse for their Dark Universe and it resulted in another “successful” collaboration.

“In the wake of 2017’s ‘The Mummy,’ Universal, in a nimble and smart move, went to Blumhouse to reinvigorate the Dark Universe with their take on ‘The Invisible Man.’ The result is yet another hugely successful horror collaboration,” Dergarabedian said.

The film chronicles the journey of Cecilia Kass (Moss) who believes that she is being stalked and terrorized by her abusive ex-boyfriend. When the police refuse to take her complaints seriously, Kass decides to take the matter in her own hands and fight back against an “Invisible Man.”

The film opened to universal acclaim and currently holds a score of 90% on review site Rotten Tomatoes. The “Handmaid’s Tale” star is being praised for her acting skills and critics believe that Moss takes the movie even higher with her performance.

The film also stars “The Haunting of Hill House” actor Oliver Jackson-Cohen as the titular “Invisible Man” and Harriet Dryer portrays the helpful sister. “A Wrinkle in Time” acting pair Aldus Hodge and Storm Reid are playing Kass’s childhood friend and daughter, respectively, in the movie.
