iOS 5.1 Untethered Jailbreak: Pod2g Jailbreaks iPad 3 Untethered; Release Just 'Weeks Away' [VIDEO]
Stefan Esser, better known as i0n1c in jailbreaking circles, announced a few days ago on Twitter that he had successfully jailbroken the new third-gen iPad running on iOS 5.1.
On Thursday, well-known French iOS hacker Pod2g joined the party and revealed that he had managed to run the untethered jailbreak on the new iPad running on iOS 5.1. The announcement came a week after the hacker had told his Twitter followers that he successfully ran iOS 5.1 untethered jailbreak on his iPhone 4.
Pod2g said that he was stabilizing the payload method, and once he was done with that, he would try to jailbreak the new iPad on iOS 5.1.1, which is the most recent version of iOS released till date.
Hey. iPad 3,1 running iOS 5.1 untethered. Next on the list: stabilizing the payload, then trying 5.1.1, Pod2g tweeted.
The hacker also uploaded a demo video of the untethered jailbreak in action on his blog. The video (can be found at the end) shows an iPad 3 running Cydia and going through a reboot.
Pod2g also said in a couple of tweets later that if the untethered jailbreak worked on the iPhone 4 and iPad 3, it should work for all devices, including the iPhone 4S. He said that the untethered jailbreak would be a nice, user friendly tool and was just a few weeks away.
ETA for 5.1 jailbreak: look at my previous tweets. Some weeks away to have a nice, user friendly tool. No beta, sorry, even for $1,000,000, he tweeted.
Although the new iPad got jailbroken multiple times by different Dev team members immediately after its release in March, there has not been any public release of any jailbreak tool, capable of jailbreaking iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and the new iPad running on the latest firmware.
As Redmond Pie noted, given that Apple is constantly improving and changing the architecture of the chips in their latest devices, it has become very difficult for iOS hackers to jailbreak them. On top of that, each new version of the firmware is making it harder for jailbreakers to find exploits in the firmware.
Because of all these concerns, Pod2g recently updated his official blog with a public poll asking: Shall we hold off the jailbreak for iOS 6?
The poll was closed last week, with 106473 (64 percent) out of 165993 voters believing that hackers should continue working on the iOS 5.1 jailbreak and release it as soon as possible. Only 55785 (33 percent) of the voters believe that the hackers should hold off until iOS 6 is released. The rest of the respondents seem like they don't care about anything at all.
Pod2g seemed to agree with the poll result. The exact words he tweeted were:
People say: 'don't release now coz iOS 5.1 tethered is good enough'. Don't forget there are AppleTV3, 4S, iPad2 and iPad3 users out there!
Meanwhile, the users who haven't updated their devices to iOS 5.1.1 are highly recommended to avoid updating to the latest version of the firmware until there is a green signal from the dev teams.
