iOS 6.1.2 Untethered Jailbreak: Evasi0n Updated To Version 1.5 To Improve Boot-Up Time, Cydia Package Updated To Fix Boot Issues [Tutorial]

Ever since the release of the long-awaited iOS 6 untethered jailbreak evasi0n, a number of performance-related issues have surfaced, forcing evad3rs, the hacker team behind the exploit, to come up with frequent updates to the jailbreak tool. This weekend saw another couple of updates with fixes for some hiccups reported by the users.

After the release of iOS 6.1.2 last week, evasi0n received an update on the same day to support the new firmware build. The update took evasi0n from version 1.3 to version 1.4.

On Saturday, team evad3rs released yet another update to evasi0n, taking it to version 1.5. The reason for the update was to improve the boot-up time of some iOS devices that had already been jailbroken with evasi0n. Apart from improving boot-up times, the evasi0n v1.5 also comes with an updated Cydia package list that automatically gets loaded onto the device during the jailbreak process.

The release of evasi0n v1.5 was preceded by another update for the evasi0n 6.x Untether jailbreak package on Cydia, taking the version to 0.4-1. According to the note on Cydia, evasi0n 6.0-6.1.2 Untether version 0.4-1 fixes booting issues that were happening during some reboots.

“This package allows your iOS 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, 6.1.1, or 6.1.2 device to reboot by itself without requiring an external tool,” said the release note.

If you are among the affected device owners, you are highly recommended to go to Cydia and upgrade the evasi0n untether package. To install the update, launch Cydia, tap on the Changes tab and then tap on Modify, followed by the Upgrade and Confirm buttons. Once the package is successfully installed, it will ask you to return to Cydia. The update doesn’t require a reboot.

Users, whose devices don’t have all these issues, can avoid going for the updates. But those who are experiencing all these issue are suggested to restore their devices in iTunes and jailbreak them again with evasi0n v1.5.

Below is a tutorial (courtesy of iPhone Hacks), explaining how to jailbreak iOS 6.1.2 using evasi0n v1.5. But before that, there are certain important aspects to be aware of:

- Users should do a clean restore, meaning restoring not from backups but setting up as a new device.

- Users should ensure that the Passcode lock on their devices is disabled. To do this, go to Settings > General > Passcode Lock > Off.

- The device should be updated to iOS 6.1.2 via an iTunes update, not OTA update.

- Users should ensure they’ve updated iTunes to the latest version.

- Backup your device using iTunes (or iCloud) before using evasi0n.

- People who are using Ultrasn0w to unlock their iPhones are recommended not to update to iOS 6.1.2 and wait for the release of updated Redsn0w or PwnageTool that will add support for iOS 6.x untethered jailbreak, allowing users to create a custom iOS firmware file. The custom firmware will help update to iOS 6.1.2 while preserving the baseband.

Procedure

Step 1: Download evasi0n v1.5 and save it in a folder on the desktop. [Download links: Mac, Windows, Linux]

Step 2: Mac users should double click on the evasi0n app to run it. Windows user should right click on the vasi0n.exe file and select “Run as administrator.” Click on “Yes” if a User Access Control window appears.

Step 3: Connect the device to your computer via USB cable.

Step 4: If connected properly, evasi0n should detect the iOS device and also confirm that it’s running on iOS 6.1.2. Now click on the Jailbreak button.

Step 5: A few automatic steps will follow, including preparing jailbreak data, injecting jailbreak data, rebooting the device, uploading Cydia, and uploading the Cydia packages list. It will take some time. So wait for evasi0n to complete its task.

Step 6: After the process gets over, a new screen will pop up asking you to unlock your device. After you unlock the device, a new app icon named “Jailbreak” will appear on the Home screen. Tap the icon only once, and the screen will go black for a moment and return to the Home screen instantly.

Step 7: Now you will again get some messages like injecting jb data, and Root Filesystem successfully remounted. During this stage, the device may reboot multiple times.

Step 8: After the process is complete, you will get a message saying, “Jailbreak complete! The device may restart a few times as it completes the process”.

Step 9: For Mac users, the device will display a large Evasi0n logo on a white background. You will also get some brief messages like “Setting up fstab and AFC2,” “Setting up Cydia,” “Setting up Cydia packages,” “Clearing SpringBoard Cache” and “Rebooting.”

After some blinker, the device will reboot again and you will get the white evasi0n screen with another set of messages including “Initializing offsets” “Finding offsets,” “Patching kernel,” “Cleaning up” and “Done! Continuing boot.”

Step 10: After the device reboots again, you are done. You will be on your Lock screen. The jailbreak process is now complete. Swipe over to the second Home screen to find the Cydia icon.

For Windows users, once you are done with Step 8, a large evasi0n logo will show up on the device screen. The logo will blink once or twice and then will stay on for a bit longer.

After that, you will be on the device’s Lock screen. Slide to Unlock the device and the Cydia icon will be there on the device’s second Home screen.

Step 11: Once you launch Cydia, give it a couple of minutes to initialize. Once the initialization is complete, the device will re-spring again. Open Cydia again, select Hacker.

Users must note that if the process gets stuck somewhere, you can restart the program, reboot the device (by holding down Power and Home until it shuts down) and rerun the process.
