DxOMark added today the audio testing to the services that it provides. The company has earned its reputation in the industry as the go-to source for comprehensive and in-depth tests of smartphone cameras. Now, it hopes to achieve the same feat in testing the microphones and speakers of smartphones.

The company’s official website states that they are now conducting audio tests because of the increasing demand for sound-centered activities on smartphones. This includes video shooting and media consumption, where audio plays a crucial part for consumers when purchasing a new smartphone. Because audio testing is still new for DxOMark, it only shared the results of an audio test conducted with seven devices.

Out of these seven smartphones, last year’s flagship smartphone from the Chinese smartphone maker Huawei, the Huawei Mate 20X tops the list. It was followed by Apple iPhone XS Max. The recently launched iPhone 11 Pro Max got a decent score, but it only ranked third and was even dominated by its predecessor, iPhone XS Max.

The audio test scores reflect the recording and playback capabilities of various smartphones. These devices were tested for different things like dynamics, volume, and background. Other devices which DxOMark subjected to audio test include Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10 Plus, Galaxy S10 Plus, Sony Xperia 1, and Honor 20 Pro. Huawei Mate 20X tops the list in the Audio test with 75 points followed by iPhone XS Max with 74 points and iPhone 11 Pro Max with 71 points.

In terms of recording, the iPhone 11 Pro Max only ranked third with 68 points while the iPhone XS Max beat it by a single point on the second spot. The top spot belongs to Huawei Mate 20X, which scored 70 points in the recording. The iPhone 11 Pro Max is equipped with Dolby Atmos and a spatial audio feature, and many expected that it would dominate the DxOMark audio test.

But, the site did not reveal more details about the audio test, so we could not explain thoroughly and learn more about it. But, looking at the test scores, there is not much difference between the iPhone models in terms of recording. But, the iPhone XS Max, aced the iPhone 11 Pro Max in terms of recording.

If you are a sound buff, you might be thinking of buying last year’s iPhone XS Max because of the recent audio test scores. However, given the minimal difference, the sound might not at all be totally different between the iPhone 11 Pro Max and the iPhone XS Max.
