- The new iPhones will reportedly be released in September
- A survey indicated that one in five iPhone and iPad users were put off by the name iPhone 13 due to superstition
The next Apple flagship will be named "iPhone 13," according to a report, despite concerns over what some deem to be an "unlucky" number.
Apple will market the upcoming 2021 iPhone models as the "iPhone 13," Economic Daily News reported, citing unnamed sources and "supply chain" checks. According to the outlet, the company will also continue to name the other variants in the lineup as "mini," "Pro" and "Pro Max."
The new iPhones are set to be released in September, according to the report. The four new models to be launched by Apple are the 6.7-inch iPhone 13 Pro Max, 6.1-inch iPhone 13 Pro and 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch models of the iPhone 13, the report said.
Units will reportedly start shipping in the third quarter, with the peak anticipated to fall in the fourth quarter.
The report comes after a recent survey conducted by SellCell on 3,000 iPhone and iPad users found that one in five users were put off by the name iPhone 13. This reportedly stemmed from triskaidekaphobia, a superstitious fear of the number 13.
When respondents were asked how they thought the next iPhones should be named, most said the devices should not be called iPhone 13, according to the survey findings.
Around 38% of people who answered the survey suggested that the upcoming Apple smartphones should be called "iPhone (2021)," while 26% indicated that the next models should be named iPhone 13. Around 13% suggested calling the devices "iPhone 12S."
Apple last used the "S" suffix in 2018 for the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max, which were released roughly a year after the iPhone X came out, Macrumors noted. However, the “S” suffix is normally reserved for devices offering minor updates on annual iPhone releases, the outlet noted.
This was the case for the iPhone 6S, which launched a year after iPhone 6 but offered few improvements from its predecessor.
The iPhone 13 is expected to come with major updates and improvements, including a display with a ProMotion 120Hz variable refresh rate and always-on capabilities. Other rumored new features include an added periscope camera, ultrawide-angle lens for night mode photography and lidar technology for the cameras of all models, according to CNet.
