Is The iPhone 7 Sold Out? How To Find Out Which Apple Stores Have The New Smartphone
Apple’s iPhone 7 and 7 Plus officially launched in stores today, although the company took preorders starting Sept. 9. For those looking to get their hands on an iPhone 7 (4.7-inch display) or the iPhone 7 Plus (5.5-inch display), the company is making it easier to check in-store availability without having to go to Apple retailers —which is a good thing, since most Apple stores seem to be sold out of just about every version of the new smartphone.
Apple’s website and the Apple Store mobile app have the option to “reserve” an iPhone, and users can then go into the store to pick up the device. At time of publication, the reservation page for the iPhone 7 was out of commission. “Reservations cannot be made right now,” reads the landing page. “Please come back starting at 8:00 a.m. to check availability, or you can shop online now and select another purchase option.”
To check in-store availability, you can also go to apple.com, select iPhone, pick the series (say, iPhone 7), pick your model (7 or 7 Plus), identify your carrier and pick your color of choice. The final step is to pick the capacity and under the sizes will be two pieces of information: delivery date and the option to check in store availability. If you click “Check Availability,” you can check to see if there is an available device in nearby stores. For the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, however, the “Check Availability” option is not there—there is only an estimated delivery date for online purchases—suggesting that the device is sold out in stores.
You can also use the Apple Store app to check the availability for iPhone models at Apple Stores. To use, simply go to the buy iPhone page, add the iPhone of your choice to the cart, and then select “Check Availability.” The app then shows locations near the user—assuming location settings are enabled—where the model is available. For all iPhone 7 models, the app currently displays "currently unavailable," rather than allowing users to check availability.
Depending on which model you're eyeing, it could be a better move to not even bother going into an Apple store. On Wednesday, Apple announced they are sold out of all iPhone 7 Plus models and the iPhone 7 in jet black, with no inventory left for stores. As for iPhone 7s in other colors (gold, rose gold, silver and black), there may be limited quantities in stock.
Apple’s recommendation for customers is to check with their carrier or other retailers for availabilities in their model of choice. They also have the choice to place an order on the Apple website, which will be fulfilled once new devices are available.
“We sincerely appreciate our customers’ patience as we work hard to get the new iPhone into the hands of everyone who wants one as quickly as possible,” Apple said, reports Recode.
The new iPhones come with a handful of changes including a redesigned home button, no headphone jack, and the device is splash and waterproof. The phone also boasts a dual lens camera—one wide angle lens and a second telephoto lens; both 12MP.
“iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus dramatically improve every aspect of the iPhone experience, reaching a new level of innovation and precision to make this the best iPhone we have ever made,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, at an Apple event last week. “The completely redesigned cameras shoot incredible photos and videos day or night, the A10 Fusion chip is the most powerful chip on any smartphone while delivering the best battery life ever in an iPhone, and an entirely new stereo speaker system provides twice the sound, all within the first water and dust resistant iPhone.”
