Richard Todd who was in 1949 nominated for an Academy Award for his role in A Hasty Heart died in his sleep, his family said Friday, the Associated Press reported.

Todd who enjoyed unusual distinction of appearing in films about D-Day, was battling cancer.

He was born Richard Andrew Palethorpe-Todd in Dublin, Ireland son to a British officer who served as an army physician in India where Todd spent a few of his childhood years.
