  • Scorsese believes there's no room for movies like "Lady Bird" or "The Souvenir"
  • The filmmaker also shared why he thought of going to Netflix for "The Irishman"

Martin Scorsese’s latest directorial project, “The Irishman,” is creating all the right buzz for the Oscars and critics have already called it a “masterpiece.” But after being in the movie industry for more than four decades, the prolific filmmaker seems to be thinking of retiring really soon.

Speaking in an interview with The Guardian, the 77-year-old filmmaker admitted that the latest crime drama might be his “last” one because there is no room for movies like “The Irishman” or Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird” in theaters today because of all the “superhero” stuff.

When asked about his comments on Marvel and the movies produced by the studio, the Academy Award-winning director noted that he and his fellow filmmakers or actors have been discussing a lot about the situation and they feel like the movie theaters are being “commandeered” by superhero movies all the time.

“It is just that there is no room for another kind of picture. I don’t know how many more I can make – maybe this is it. The last one,” Scorsese said.

The filmmaker also explained how crazy it can get for a movie like “The Souvenir” to get a large audience and make some right amount of money for all the people who have been working hard on such films. Scorsese, whose latest movie is considered to one of the top contenders for the Best Picture category at the upcoming Academy Awards, also revealed the reason why he got in touch with Netflix for the movie.

“We realized when we were taking this project around that the doors are closing. So what’s going on? I looked over at the theaters right down the block – 10 screens showing the same picture,” Scorsese said.

The “Raging Bull” helmer also explained that a section of moviegoers was really unhappy that the “Irishman” was shown in theaters for just four weeks, but the reality is that the streaming giant and movie theaters could not come to “terms.”

Previously, in an interview with Empire, Scorsese stirred a controversy when he compared the films produced by Marvel Studios to theme parks and stated that those superhero movies are practically not “cinema.”

Meanwhile, “The Irishman” is turning out to be a massive success for the filmmaker. The film was recently regarded as one of the top 10 movies of the year by the American Film Institute (AFI). Meanwhile, it was named Best Picture of 2019 by the National Board Of Review (NBR), San Diego Film Critics Society, and New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC).

“The Irishman,” starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci in pivotal roles, is nominated for 14 awards at the Critics’ Choice Awards, including a Best Director nod for Scorsese. On the other hand, it got four noms at the Golden Globes.
