Irked Over 15-year-old's Relationship With Boy, Father Kills Daughter By Drowning

A man in India killed his teen daughter after he was upset with her for continuing a relationship he disapproved of, reports said.

The 15-year-old unidentified girl from Ballari, in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, was allegedly drowned by her father, Omkara Gowda on Oct. 31, police said Wednesday, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Gowda had reportedly warned her daughter to end her relationship with the boy who was from a different community. However, when he realized that the girl was continuing the affair despite his warnings, he decided to murder her, police said.

On the day of the fatal incident, Gowda took his daughter out on the pretext of watching a movie. When the duo reached the theatre and the movie had already started, he took her out for shopping and dinner.

"While returning home, he stopped his motorcycle near the Tungabhadra canal and asked his daughter to get off. He took her to the canal and pushed her head inside the water, killing her," an investigating officer said, as per the outlet.

The girl called for help, but Gowda watched her drown, police said. After the alleged murder, the father reportedly fled the city. Meanwhile, the girl's mother filed a missing person complaint with the police regarding her daughter.

Gowda was taken into custody after he returned Tuesday. Upon questioning he admitted to killing his daughter, news outlet India Today reported.

Meanwhile, investigators are trying to locate the child's body.

In a similar incident last month, an unidentified minor girl in Vijayapura, a city in the southern Indian state of Karnataka killed herself after her father caught her with a boy he disapproved of. Upset over the girl's death, the father reportedly killed the boy by forcing him to consume the same poison she ingested. The police initially believed that the couple eloped after the parents reported them missing. However, after investigators found the boy's body in a river, they questioned the girl's father and a relative who confessed to killing the boy and dumping the body. It is not clear what happened to the girl's body, reports said.
