'It Was Going To Happen Eventually': Blockbuster Closes Another Location Leaving Just One In The World
Previously, if you wanted to rent your favorite movie, you headed to Blockbuster. But now, in order to visit the chain, you will have to travel to Oregon. Following the closure of one Blockbuster location in Australia, the West Coast U.S. location is now the only one left in the world.
At one point Blockbuster, which first opened in Dallas in 1985, once had 9,000 stores worldwide. By 2017, just 10 Blockbuster stores remained in the U.S. after the company filed bankruptcy in 2010 and were bought by Dish Network, leading many franchise locations to have to close their doors, according to CNN.
Until recently, the company was left with just two storefronts, one in Morley, Australia, and the other in Bend, Oregon. That is all set to change as the Western Australia store is set to close at the end of this month. One of the owners, Lyn Borszeky, told The Western Australian that those in the area are sad to see it go.
"We put in a pretty good effort to be the last one in Australia, I suppose, but it was going to happen eventually and now is the time,” she said.
Sandi Harding, the general manager of the Oregon Blockbuster, expressed her sadness when two stores in Alaska closed in July, telling CNN at the time, “We all have a kinship with the other Blockbusters.”
Speaking to The Oregonian on Tuesday about the latest Blockbuster closure, she said she was no idea her location would be the last standing. “I had no idea. I wondered which one of us was going to hold out the longest.”
