Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic crushed Great Britain’s Johanna Konta during the Italian Open Final. The event was held in Rome, and the match lasted for one hour and 25 minutes before Pliskova managed to take the Rome title over Konta.

According to ESPN, Pliskova secured her third clay-court title and her first win in Rome when she defeated Great Britain’s pride. Due to this, Konta didn’t succeed in landing her first clay-court title.

Before facing Pliskova, Konta defeated Grand Slam winners Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens. She also managed to surpass Madrid Open champion Kiki Bertens until the British tennis star came out short as Pliskova succeeded in breaking her under pressure during the final match.

With Pliskova’s win, she advanced in the world rankings as the second place and will be present as the no. 2 seed at the French Open.

In her interview with ESPN, Pliskova admitted that she was feeling a bit nervous when she fought in the finals against Konta. She also wished and hoped that she can bring the same gameplay with her once she competes in Paris.

Konta remains upbeat despite the competition’s results and displayed good sportsmanship. "I'm pleased with how I've been progressing this year and how I've been improving with every match. To make it to a final here, this is my second biggest final after Miami, this is a big moment for me," she stated.

According to BBC News, Pliskova won against Konta with a final result of 6-3, 6-4. The outlet noted that Konta was the first British woman to reach the Italian Open final since Virginia Wade in 1971, while Pliskova is the first Czech woman to win it since 1978.

Even though Konta successfully defeated known tennis players, she wasn’t able to maintain her excellent form during her game against Pliskova. Konta lacked the ability to predict and counter Pliskova’s sharper attacks, which led to her composure getting broken.

Although the results of the Italian Open brought devastating news for British fans, a new door of hope has opened as Konta, despite losing, still earns a seeding at the French Open.

The French Open is set to begin on May 20. Pliskova and Konta, who just put on a great show at the Italian Open, are expected to electrify the crowd and deliver the same intensity once more.
