Italy’s loss to Uruguay on Tuesday knocked the Blues out of contention at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and drew stunned reactions from Italian fans in the process.

In the match’s 81st minute, Uruguay’s Diego Godin broke the stalemate with a header off a Gaston Ramirez corner kick. Italy never recovered from the 1-0 deficit, and has not advanced past the World Cup’s group stage since 2006. After the loss, manager Cesare Prandelli announced he was resigning.

Italy’s efforts were hampered by poor discipline and a series of egregious fouls. Mario Balotelli received a yellow card after he accidentally kicked an opposing player in the head, which would have kept him out of Italy’s round-of-16 game if it had qualified. Soon after, Claudio Marchisio received a red card for his poorly judged tackle, which forced Italy to play a man down for the remainder of the match.

However, the most memorable part of Tuesday’s match occurred at the 78-minute mark, when Uruguay’s Luis Suarez allowed his emotions to get the better of him. When defender Giorgio Chiellini attempted to mark Suarez near the Italian goal, the Uruguayan bit him on the shoulder.

Many fans have already called for FIFA to ban Suarez for his actions. He could face a two-year ban under FIFA’s guidelines, according to the Daily Express. (And he'd certainly get kicked out of day care if he were an American toddler.) For Italy, Suarez’s bite merely added injury to the insult of their country’s elimination from the World Cup.
