It's Dunkin' vs. Starbucks In The Pumpkin Spice Coffee Battle
Coffee and doughnut chain Dunkin' got a head start on Starbucks this year with the release of its Pumpkin Spice drinks. On Wednesday, Dunkin added three more additional items to its menu.
Dunkin' had added a Jack-o-Lantern-inspired doughnut with a creme filling, a Spider Donut with a doughnut hole on top, and Peanut Butter Cup Macchiato to go along with its Pumpkin Spice drinks, Blood Orange refresher and pumpkin bakery items.
Pumpkin seems to be the fan-favorite coffee flavor during the fall season, leading Dunkin' to release its pumpkin spice flavor as early as Aug. 17.
Starbucks, which offers a Pumpkin Spice Latte, incorporated an "Apple Crisp Oatmilk Macchiato" into its fall menu for the second time this year. Starbucks will usually offer a hot apple cider drink for fall, as well.
Both Starbucks and Dunkin' are expected to also release a holiday menu in November which usually includes coffee flavors like sugar cookies or peppermint mocha.
Massachusetts-based Dunkin' has over 11,000 locations in the United States. In 2020, Dunkin' Brands announced it would close 800 locations in the U.S. due to pandemic-related revenue losses.
Starbucks has over 15,000 locations in the U.S. The Seattle-based company is coming off a third quarter that beat Wall Street estimates.
