Jada Pinkett Smith Reveals 'Biggest Wound' In Her Relationships: 'Not Having Protection'
Jada Pinkett Smith opened up about her relationships on "Red Table Talk," noting that her "biggest wound" has been not having protection.
"My thing was, just, not having protection. That's my biggest wound that comes out in all my relationships," Jada said in a clip shared by the official handle of "Red Table Talk" on Facebook. "And I've looked for (the) craziest kind of protection, and I don't have a really good sense of what's safe and what's not."
The 50-year-old actress further revealed that she is "either extremely protective or extremely defensive."
Jada's mother, actress Adrienne Banfield-Norris who was also featured in the clip, went on to explain that Jada's nature was developed after her grandmother's death.
"And I'll tell you why. The environment. It was my addiction. She found her security through my mother," Banfield-Norris explained. "But, when Mommy died, that's when my addiction really took off." Jada added, "She died when I was still in middle school, you know, 11, 12 years old."
Banfield-Norris noted that time was really essential for Jada to feel "secure and safe."
Jada's 21-year-old daughter Willow Smith, who was also part of the conversation, shared that's the time when "womanhood starts." Banfield-Norris agreed and said, "And that's when she (Jada) lost her security. My mother was her backbone."
Jada went on to share that her grandmother's house was "safe" for her, but after her death, there was no safety for her. Hence, she "went into the world" and created her own safety, noting that it was "crazy."
The entire conversation will drop this Wednesday on Facebook Watch at 12 p.m. ET.
Jada made headlines in March after her husband, actor Will Smith, slapped comedian Chris Rock for cracking a joke on her during Oscars 2022.
Following the slap, Will took to Instagram the next day and apologised to the comedian for his action. "Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive," he wrote at that time. "My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable."
Will confirmed last year that he and Jada have been in an open relationship, noting that they never believed in a "conventional marriage."
