Jake Paul Shockingly Favored To Win Over Ben Askren In Boxing Match
KEY POINTS
- Jake Paul is taking on a professional MMA fighter in Ben Askren for the first time in his boxing career
- Some predict that Paul can capitalize on Askren's poor stand-up game
- The YouTuber confirms he's training with UFC welterweight contender Jorge Masvidal
Jake Paul has convinced some personalities in both the internet and combat sports that he can beat Ben Askren in a boxing match.
Following his one-sided knockout win ex-NBA star Nate Robinson last November, Paul is taking his game to another level as by facing a former mixed martial arts (MMA) world champion in Askren.
Paul has often been criticized for not truly possessing legitimate boxing skills. However, the narrative for his upcoming bout against Askren seems to be quite different--with the internet sensation being a favorite to win.
YouTube personality Kavos believes that his fellow influencer has the capacity to obliterate the retired UFC star, pointing at Askren’s subpar striking game.
“Not going to lie Jake has a real shot at beating him. Ben's stand-up game is very weak. [It] will be interesting ,” Kavos wrote on Twitter.
Surprisingly, some combat sports athletes also think that Askren wouldn’t be able to outlast Paul in a stand-up fight.
“Thoughts? Ben Askren never really had any striking/boxing technique when he fought in the UFC, so I can see this going well for him,” UFC contender Kyle Nelson tweeted.
“Either Jake Paul will clip Askren and win early or we are talking eight rounds of really really boring clinch fighting. Jake probably would gas in late rounds though, allowing Askren to tee off,” bare-knuckle boxer David Rickels said on Twitter.
Askren doesn’t refute accusations over the lack of power in his hands. In fact, his plan is to brutalize Paul after possibly gassing him out.
"Because I don't have a huge amount of power," Askren said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show. "It'll take me some time to wear him down and make him hate his life. And then eventually he's gonna say, 'Hey look, I'm a rich celebrity. I don't need to get f--king punched anymore. I'm just gonna roll over.'"
It can be recalled that Jorge Masvidal humiliated Askren with a record-setting five-second KO win at UFC 239.
As per Paul, he is looking to break the said record by taking some pointers from “Gamebred” himself.
“We’re here in Miami training,” Paul revealed on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show. “I wanted to channel Masvidal’s energy since he’s in Florida. I wanted to link up with Masvidal."
"I’m linking up with Masvidal tomorrow," he added. "He’s going to help me train for this fight. And hopefully, I can knock out Askren faster than Masvidal did. I know it seems like a lofty goal, but if I can get under 4.9 seconds then I can break his record.”
