Jalen Ramsey Unimpressed By Roethlisberger, Ryan, Calls Eagles', Texans' Quarterbacks Future MVPs
Saying that Jalen Ramsey isn’t afraid to speak his mind when it comes to NFL quarterbacks might be a gross understatement. The Jacksonville Jaguars' cornerback gave his opinion regarding most of the league’s starting signal callers in a recent interview with GQ, and he certainly didn’t hold back.
Not all of Ramsey’s thoughts are controversial. He acknowledges that Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady are good, and he’s impressed by Drew Brees, Kirk Cousins, Russell Wilson and Philip Rivers. The third-year player believes Tyrod Taylor is underrated, and he believes that Deshaun Watson and Carson Wentz are future MVPs.
“Deshaun Watson, he'll be the league MVP in a couple years. One hundred percent. There's not even a debate about that,” Ramsey told GQ. “Him and Carson Wentz, for every year starting now until five to ten years, it's gonna be them two. They're that good.”
Ramsey doesn’t seem to know quite how to feel about some of the league’s other young quarterbacks. He agrees that Jared Goff and Jimmy Garoppolo played well last year, though he gives much of the credit to their head coaches. Ramsey called Dak Prescott “good” and “alright” while noting that Ezekiel Elliott is the most important part of the Dallas Cowboys’ offense.
When it comes to the quarterbacks that were taken in the 2018 NFL Draft, Ramsey is clear on where he stands.
“I think [Buffalo Bills draft pick Josh] Allen is trash. I don't care what nobody say. He's trash. And it's gonna show too. That's a stupid draft pick to me. We play them this year, and I'm excited as hell. I hope he's their starting quarterback,” Ramsey said.
“He played at Wyoming. Every time they played a big school—like, they played Iowa State, which is not a big school in my opinion because I went to Florida State, and he threw five interceptions, and they lost by a couple touchdowns or something like that. He never beat a big school. If you look at his games against big schools, it was always hella interceptions, hella turnovers. It's like: Yo, if you're this good, why couldn't you do better? He fits that mold, he's a big, tall quarterback. Big arm, supposedly. I don't see it, personally.”
Ramsey believes No.32 overall pick Lamar Jackson should’ve been taken ahead of Allen. The Baltimore Ravens took Jackson with the last selection of the first round, and it sounds like Ramsey thinks the rookie deserves the starting job.
“Just being honest about it, [Joe] Flacco sucks,” Ramsey said. “I played him two years in a row. He sucks.”
Andrew Luck was a target of Ramsey, claiming the Indianapolis Colts’ franchise quarterback “isn’t that good.” The cornerback called Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan “overrated,” pointing out that the 2016 NFL MVP saw his numbers take a major hit when Kyle Shanahan was no longer the team’s offensive coordinator. Ramsey also said Ben Roethlisberger is “decent at best,” naming Antonio Brown as the biggest reason for Pittsburgh’s success in the passing game.
Ramsey and the Jaguars beat Roethlisberger and the Steelers twice last season, and the two teams will meet again in Week 11 of the 2018 NFL season. Jacksonville faces Luck and the Colts in the previous week. The Jaguars are scheduled to visit Allen and the Bills in Week 12.
Jacksonville lost to the New England Patriots in last year’s AFC Championship Game after being the AFC’s No.1 defense in the 2017 regular season. Ramsey was a First-team All-Pro selection.
