Jameis Winston Rumors: Washington Redskins, Los Angeles Chargers Not Expected To Sign Quarterback
Jameis Winston is the best quarterback available in free agency now that the likes of Tom Brady and Philip Rivers have found new homes. The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ signal caller led the NFL in passing yards last season, but it appears that he won’t be handed a starting job.
The New England Patriots need a starting quarterback in the wake of Brady’s departure. Just about every other team is either expected to move forward with a quarterback that’s already on the roster or find a signal caller at the top of the 2020 NFL Draft.
The Los Angeles Chargers might appear to be the best fit for Winston, considering Rivers has signed with the Indianapolis Colts. However, L.A. doesn’t seem to have much interest in the former No.1 overall pick.
Tyrod Taylor is the favorite to be the Chargers’ starting quarterback in Week 1. Taylor started 46 games for the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns from 2015-2018. He was Los Angeles’ backup last season.
Head coach Anthony Lynn is likely to prefer Taylor over a mistake-prone quarterback like Winston. Winston led the NFL with 30 interceptions in 2019. Taylor has a 1.5% career interception rate, never throwing more than six picks in a single season.
The Chargers could draft a quarterback with the No.6 overall pick.
The Washington Redskins took Dwayne Haskins with the No.15 overall pick in last year’s draft. There is speculation that the quarterback isn’t certain to be the team’s starter in 2020.
Just don’t expect Winston to replace Haskins under center. According to ESPN’s John Keim, there is “no chance” that the Redskins will acquire Winston.
Haskins went 2-5 as a starter in his rookie season. He completed 119 of 203 passes for 1,365 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Winston completed 60.7% of his passes for 5,109 yards, 33 touchdowns and 30 interceptions with an 84.3 passer rating in 2019. He’s gone 13-25 as a starter in the last three seasons.
