Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston gave advice Wednesday to elementary students in St. Petersburg, Florida, but it did not go over well for the football star.

Winston, 23, who was a guest at Melrose Elementary, spoke to the students for about 40 minutes, telling them they could do anything they put their minds to. His motivational speech appeared to be going smoothly until he started to talk about gender roles.

"All my young boys, stand up. The ladies, sit down," Winston said, according to the Tampa Bay Times. "But all my boys, stand up. We strong, right? We strong! We strong, right? All my boys, tell me one time: I can do anything I put my mind to. Now a lot of boys aren't supposed to be soft-spoken. You know what I'm saying? One day y'all are going to have a very deep voice like this (in deep voice). One day, you'll have a very, very deep voice.

“But the ladies, they’re supposed to be silent, polite, gentle. My men, my men (are) supposed to be strong. I want y’all to tell me what the third rule of life is: I can do anything I put my mind to. Scream it!”

Winston then issued an apology after receiving a series of backlash on social media over his comment that women are supposed to be “silent, polite, gentle.”

“I was making an effort to interact with a young male in the audience who didn’t seem to be paying attention, and I didn’t want to single him out so I asked all the boys to stand up,” Winston told the local newspaper. “During my talk, I used a poor word choice that may have overshadowed that positive message for some.”

Winston has made insensitive comments about women in the past. The former Florida State star also made headlines for incidents involving the law.

Sept. 16, 2014: Winston stood on a table at Florida State University and shouted the popular internet phrase "F*** her right in the p****!" in front of dozens of FSU students. As punishment, Winston was benched for half of a game against Clemson.

April 29, 2014: Winston was accused of stealing about $33 worth of crab legs from a supermarket. He said he forgot to pay for them. Florida deputies issued him a civil citation for shoplifting at the Ocala Road Publix that day.

July 21, 2013: Winston was accused of stealing soda from a Burger King restaurant in Tallahassee. A restaurant employee told police she gave Winston a cup to get water, but instead, he used it for soda. No charges were filed against him.

Dec. 7, 2012: Winston was accused of sexual assault after a fellow Florida State student alleged he drugged and raped her in his apartment bathroom. Winston was never charged with a crime. The woman later filed a civil lawsuit against Winston.

Nov. 25, 2012: Winston and teammate Chris Casher were detained by FSU police after an unidentified woman reported two men carrying a "long-barreled handgun" on campus. Winston and Casher told police officers they were shooting at squirrels with a pellet gun. Shortly after, they were released. No charges were filed against them.

Nov. 25, 2012: A few hours after they were stopped on campus, Winston, Casher and two other Florida State players, Mario Edwards and Kenneth “P.J.” Williams were involved in a series of shooting "battles" involving a BB-and pellet gun at their apartment complex. The players were investigated for $4,200 in damage. The apartment manager initially wanted to press charges but FSU athletic official vowed that the players would play for the cost.
