James Charles Thinks Dixie D’Amelio’s Chef Controversy Was ‘Taken Way Out Of Proportion’
Teen TikTok personalities Dixie D’Amelio and Charli D'Amelio came under fire in November after sharing a YouTube video of their family dinner with famed makeup artist James Charles. Weeks after receiving online criticism, Dixie sat down with Charles to publicly reflect on the controversy.
In a video titled “Dinner With the D’Amelios,” were accused of being rude and disrespectful to their personal chef Aaron Mays.
At one point during the dinner, Dixie began eating her paella and learned that Mays included snails in the dish. The 19-year-old began loudly gagging and appeared to vomit. Meanwhile, Charli asked if there were “dino nuggets” she could eat instead of the gourmet meal.
Charli went on to further upset fans by complaining that she was upset that she wouldn’t reach 100 million TikTok within a year. Both girls have since lost followers across all of their social platforms.
Dixie and Charli have publicly apologized for their behavior.
Charles was surprised by the public reaction to the video. “The whole thing definitely got taken way out of proportion," he said in a new video shared on Dixie’s YouTube account.
"I can see why however from the public’s perspective why it got turned into what it did, but I didn’t think the reaction should have been as harsh.”
Charles added that "the situation between me and Charli with the whole followers thing was an innocent joke.”
Charles suggested that since the team allowed the incident to stay in the video, it should have been obvious that there were no ill intentions behind Dixie spitting out the food.
“If you snapped or were having a bad day or were actually being rude to somebody, your team is going to see it and be like ‘Cut that out of the video immediately,’ because you’re going to know it makes you look bad,” Charles said.
“But it was kept in the video because everyone genuinely thought it was funny, and everyone here knew it wasn’t actually a shady moment.”
Although Dixie was criticized online for what many felt was disrespectful behavior, Mays wasn’t offended when Dixie didn't react favorably to his dish. The Hollywood Fix shared a video of Mays' comments.
“Those girls are the greatest, I love them. It was all fun and games,” he said.
“I don’t expect her to love the snails. Like I said, somebody thought it would be funny to feed them snails, and they reacted the way they reacted. It’s all good.”
Following the controversy, Dixie admitted that she and her sister are more cautious about the content they share due to how it may change the way others perceive them.
The D'Amelio sisters, who were born and raised in Connecticut, have generated attention in 2020 for their ability to gain TikTok followers. Charli, 16, has 102.5 million followers on TikTok. Dixie, 19, has 46 million followers on the app. The D'Amelio family is signed with United Talent Agency.
