With the massive success of DC’s R-rated “Joker” movie, the studio has become more open to doing R-rated movies. Harley Quinn’s newest movie “Birds of Prey,” for example, will be an R-rated Harley-centric movie and according to reports, it’s quite possible that James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” will also be rated R.

According to Variety, “Birds of Prey” and “The Suicide Squad” may get R ratings. If so, it may be a good fit for Gunn, who, beyond “Guardians of the Galaxy,” has never been afraid to create shocking, adult-oriented content. It wouldn’t be the first time he would be directing a dark, ultra-violent, and edgy superhero film since his previous work includes “Super.”

Gunn also produced the popular dark take on Superman, “Brightburn,” which featured an alien superhuman violently tormenting a small town.

Walter Hamada was brought in from New Line last year to usher in a new era of DCEU films. He is working with executive Toby Emmerich and the two of them have already helped R-rated New Line horror films reach success.

They’ve notably helped ease Warner Brothers’ execs weary minds with the success of other R-rated hits like “It.” That said, since working with DC films, from the relatively successful “Aquaman,” to the critical hits of “Shazam” and “Joker,” it’s easy for Warner Brothers to put trust in the duo.
