James Holmes made his first court appearance in the Centennial, Colorado courthouse at 11:30 a.m. EDT Monday, when the world got its first look at the man said to be responsible for the worst mass killing in the state's history.

Holmes, a 24-year-old former medical school student, appeared dazed and deranged with his eyes at times downcast.

Dressed in a maroon jailhouse jumpsuit, the Colorado shooting suspect is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder and will be formally charged next week on July 30.

While Eighteenth Judicial District Attorney Carol Chambers told the Associated Press on Monday her office is considering pursuing the death penalty against Holmes, Colorado District attorney Carol Chambers told reporters it will be months before a decision is made on capital punishment.

As psychological experts are weighing in on what they believe Holmes's deranged looks indicate, Chambers declined to comment on whether the faces were provoked by medication that the suspect may have been under the influence of.
