Jane the Virgin
Newlyweds Michael Cordero (Brett Dier) and Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) are navigating the challenges of married life in “Jane the Virgin” Season 3. The CW

During the first two seasons of “Jane the Virgin,” fans were sent into a tizzy as Michael Cordero (Brett Dier) and Rafael Solano (Justin Baldoni) vied for Jane Gloriana Villanueva’s (Gina Rodriguez) affections. She really loved both guys, but in the end, Jane broke Rafael’s heart and chose to marry Michael.

Now, showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman has told Entertainment Weekly that they knew Jane would end up with Michael even before they even started the show. At the same time, they knew Jane is going to follow her Abel’s (Ivonne Col) instruction and wait for marriage before having sex.

“I knew that she was going to wait until she got married and that she was going to get married to Michael, and that’s who it would be with,” she said. “So I knew all those things, but I didn’t have an idea of what it would look like.”

In the end, Snyder and her team decided to make a cartoon out of Jane and Michael’s first time having sex. According to her, everything worked out perfectly. “We knew we wanted it to be more magical and more emotional,” she said.

Earlier, Rodriguez told Yahoo! Style that the show really lived up to her expectations of Jane’s first time. “I really wanted Jane to do it in the way she had maybe envisioned it when she was a child — the man that she loved and the man that she married,” she said. “So I was so happy that that’s the way it ended playing out. I was somewhat relieved because then we got to enter all these other storylines.”

Meanwhile, Baldoni told Fuse that fans need not worry about his character. After Jane tied the knot with Michael, Baldoni said Rafael had a wake-up call and decided to move on for good.

“I know a lot of the fans don't, but I do think so. Rafael is a pretty strong guy,” he said. “I don't know a lot of TV characters who have had to deal with as much as Rafael has to deal with in the past few years.”

“Jane the Virgin” Season 3 airs every Monday at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
