‘Jane The Virgin’ Season 3 Spoilers: Showrunner Talks About The Big Love Triangle Twist
For the past two seasons, the love triangle shared by Jane Gloriana Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez), Michael Cordero (Brett Dier) and Rafael Solano (Justin Baldoni) really drove the storyline for the show “Jane the Virgin.”
But when Jane finally chose Michael and married him in Season 2, showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman decided that Rafael can no longer be hung up on Jane.
This Season 3, fans are finally witnessing the huge shift in Jane and Rafael’s co-parenting relationship now that he is no longer in love with her.
“Jane got married,” Urman told Indie Wire. “That’s a big step, and if all of the people in our world stay stuck and don’t acknowledge that she’s gotten married, then you’re holding your characters back and you’re not allowing them to develop and have new, full and interesting relationships.”
“The series made a choice to have Jane get married and I wanted everybody in our world to understand what that meant and have it count for something. And I also was frankly sick of playing the love triangle,” she added.
With Rafael over Jane, Snyder said that there’s room for more drama. What if Jane does not like Rafael’s new girlfriend, or what if that new person would interfere with her mommy duties to Mateo?
“It… let me have more fun with Rafael because I was kind of sick of seeing him moon. He’s a great-looking guy and he’s going to have ladies in his life, and he really did love Jane but I thought it was an important character step for him to watch Jane get married and to have that affect him too,” she said. “Because who would he be if he’s just constantly skulking around the background?”
The showrunner echoed the same sentiment to Entertainment Weekly a while back. “Once he makes that change and isn’t head over heels for her any more, how does that change their relationship?” Urman questioned.
However, Urman told The Hollywood Reporter that they need to resolve the Petra-Anezka storyline first before Rafael finds someone new. For now, Anezka has held her twin sister captive and has taken over her identity. But Rafael hasn’t suspected anything yet.
“Jane the Virgin” Season 3 airs every Monday at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
