‘Jane The Virgin’ Star Gina Rodriguez Reveals Why She Wants To Honor Women Doing ‘Exceptional Work’
“Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez gets a high every time she supports other women, so she does it every chance she gets.
On Dec. 19, Rodriguez co-created the 1st Annual Young Women's Honors Gala, which is dedicated to celebrating the achievements of women in a variety of industries. Some of the women they applauded that day were Olympian gymnast Simone Biles and literacy advocate Fereshteh Forough.
Rodriguez said the honorees truly deserved their time in the spotlight because of their “exceptional work” in the fields of technology, education, philanthropy, activism and sports. “I think there’s nothing greater than to make, glorify, and uplift women doing work in fields that aren’t often spoken about in social media or pop culture, that aren’t often tweeted about or Instagrammed about or highlighted,” Rodriguez told Bustle.
In doing so, Rodriguez said young women will be inspired to follow their lead. “You can see someone that looks like you in the light that you’ve never seen before,” she said.
As for Rodriguez, she is still working on “Jane the Virgin” Season 3. This time around, her character Jane Gloriana Villanueva is busy juggling being a wife, mother and writer, among many other things.
Rodriguez is happy that her character gets to pursue new and exciting things this season. “It’s really nice opening it up to other storylines. The show isn’t about her virginity. The show is about this girl going through life, and that just happens to be a really fun aspect of what made it interesting and a little different, and it made her holding on to her convictions such a powerful thing as a woman on television,” she told Yahoo! Style.
“Jane the Virgin” Season 3 airs every Monday at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
