Janet Hubert, Original Aunt Viv, Calls Will Smith an ‘A—Hole’
Janet Hubert, the woman who was the original Aunt Viv in the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, has made it clear that there will never be a reunion because she will not be working with an a-hole like Will Smith.
Smith posted a picture on his Facebook page on Dec. 22, with himself and several of the cast members from the early '90s show, indicating they have kept in touch. In the photograph were James Avery, Karyn Parsons, Alfonso Riberio and Tatyana Ali, who are better known to fans as Uncle Phil, Hillary, Carlton and Ashley.
TMZ reported that photograph was taken at a luncheon for Parsons' charity Sweet Blackberry. It is a nonprofit that shares stories of African-American achievement with children.
Hubert was noticeably absent in that photograph. So were Daphne Reid (who also played Aunt Viv) and Joseph Marcell, who played the butler, Geoffrey.
Got the Holiday season started right with a Fresh Prince of Bel Air reunion...there's nothin' like spending Holidays with fam! Smith wrote as an accompanying message for the picture.
But Hubert made it clear to TMZ that almost 16 years after the show went off air, she still doesn't have a liking for Smith.
There will never be a reunion ... as I will never do anything with an a**hole like Will Smith, Hubert told TMZ. He is still an egomaniac and has not grown up. This constant reunion thing will never ever happen in my lifetime unless there is an apology, which he doesn't know the word.
Hubert was replaced on the show by Reid after leaving in 1993. Her contract was up and The Huffington Post said Hubert couldn't reach a deal with NBC.
TMZ has also reported that Hubert said in the past that she believes Smith is to be blamed for her departure from the show.
The Huffington Post reported that in her 2010 memoir, Hubert said she was scheduled to work only 10 weeks during the following season's production. She also noted that she was also restricted by contract from other TV appearances, and therefore, couldn't make a living under those terms.
Smith has also spoken out about Hubert's attitude at the time. He reportedly told the Atlanta Journal that Hubert brought her problems to work.
I can say straight up that Janet Hubert wanted the show to be the 'Aunt Viv of Bel-Air Show' because I know she is going to dog me in the press ... She has basically gone from a quarter of a million dollars a year to nothing, Smith said. She's mad now but she's been mad all along. She said once, 'I've been in the business for 10 years and this snotty-nosed punk comes along and gets a show.' No matter what, to her I'm just the AntiChrist.
Hubert told BVonBooks at the time that her departure was planned for a long time.
There will never be a reunion of the 'Fresh Prince.' Will Smith and Alfonso [Ribiero, who played Carlton Banks] destroyed a 20-year-career with untruths, she said. I got slammed. Will apologized later in an 'Essence Magazine' article, but it still lingers. It's still there.
