Jared Leto Claims He Never Sent Used Condoms To 'Suicide Squad' Cast
Actors can sometimes go the extra mile to get into their characters. Jared Leto, who played Joker in "Suicide Squad" seemed to have gotten into his character too intensely. The actor was known to have sent unusual gifts, including used condoms, to his "Suicide Squad" co-stars, but he now claims it was just a joke.
On Tuesday the actor spoke with “Entertainment Weekly” and said that it was not true.
“99.9 percent of what people read is bulls**t, there were no used condoms. Any of the very few gifts that were ever given were given with a spirit of fun and adventure and received with laughter, fun, and adventure,” he continued. "It's all filmed! They filmed it all! People were dying. We were just having a goof," Leto said.
He explained, “I’m playing a guy called the Joker, it’s OK to play some jokes. Nothing ever crossed any lines, and it’s not up to other people on the internet to create those lines.”
"I'm an artist at the end of the day. If I do something risky and you don't like it, basically, you can kiss my a**," he added.
Viola Davis, who played government agent Amanda Waller in the movie, detailed Leto’s “horrific gifts” during an interview with Vanity Fair. “I did not receive any [gifts] personally,” Davis said, but she recalled that Leto had a “henchman” plop a dead pig on a table. “And then he sends Margot Robbie a black rat. It was still alive, in a box. She screamed, and then she kept it,” she said.
In 2016, the 49-year-old actor himself confirmed with E! News during the "Suicide Squad" red carpet that he gave his castmates “anal beads” and “used condoms.”
“I know it’s a family show, but we can educate people here. At least they were used,” he said before adding that he sent them to “everybody.”
The “Dallas Buyers Club” actor said he “did a lot of things” to “create an element of surprise, spontaneity and to really break down the many walls that may be there.”
Leto may claim now that it was all a joke, but back then all his co-stars confirmed his bizarre gifts. Will Smith who played Deadshot, told E! that when he received used condoms, he thought, “Jared has gone full Joker.”
Margot Robbie, who played Joker’s love interest Harley Quinn, also confirmed she received the contraceptive. The actress also added she received “so many weird things." "I can’t even begin to tell you the weird things I got,” she said.
