Jeffrey Adam Gutt was different than any other performer on Thursday night’s “X Factor” when he came out singing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" at his Greensboro, North Carolina audition.

The 36-year-old musician is a single father to his 4-year-old son Talon who ran out onto the stage after hearing his father sing to for the first time at the audition.

Gutt, (pronounced goot) candidly explained to a fellow contestant his dream about becoming a singer:

“Since I was 6 years old I was like I need to do this for the rest of my life and then you have a kid. I was okay with being broke before because it was just me. I mean I barely get by.”

“It has to happen actually,” he joked. “I have no back-up plan.”

The single father told the cameras that this was his last chance to make all his dreams come true of being a rock star and saying that he “just wants his son to be proud of his father.”

When asked why he came onto “X Factor” by Demi Lovato he explained that he wanted to be able to support his son.

Simon Cowell was shocked when Gutt revealed he was going to be singing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," but the rest of the judges sat back and listened.

Soon all of the judges were nodding their heads in approval of Gutt’s “gritty” unique voice and didn’t take long for the audience to be brought to their feet.

When he had finished it seemed as if Britney Spears were ready to cry—always a great sign for the judges.

L. A. Reid told him “I am a fan” and that he picked one of the best songs and “hit it out of the park.”

Spears loved his “mysterious” voice and as Lovato began to describe the grit in his voice thunder from the storm in Greensboro cracked through the arena.

Lovato added it into her critique telling Gutt, “Even God’s rocking out right now.”

When Lovato turned to Simon Cowell at the end of his performance and said “He was like the Josh Groban of rock and roll,” he replied “better.”
