Financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking of underaged girls, has killed himself in prison, reports said.

Epstein, a one-time friend of Bill Clinton and Donald Trump, reportedly hanged himself at Manhattan’s Metropolitan Correctional Center where he was being held without bail after his arrest on July 6.

He was discovered at 7.30 a.m. Saturday and transported to the New York Downtown Hospital, multiple reports said. He was in cardiac arrest on arrival, reports said. International Business Times could not independently confirm these details.

Epstein, 66, allegedly sexually exploited as many as a “dozen” underaged girls from 2002 to 2005. The alleged incidents occurred in New York and Florida, and the victims were as young as 14 years old, according to prosecutors. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

He was previously put on suicide watch after he was found semi-conscious on July 23 with marks on his neck on the floor of his jail cell.

He was put on suicide watch late last month, after being ound semi-conscious inside his jail cell. He reportedly had marks visible on his neck at that time.

A new criminal probe was recently opened to look into the handling of a 2008 Florida case involving Epstein, where then-U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta allowed the multimillionaire to plead guilty to lesser charges in state court.
