Jenji Kohan is reportedly working on a new anthology series for Netflix.
The series, entitled “Social Distance,” will reflect what most people are experiencing amid the coronavirus pandemic. The “Orange Is the New Black” creator is teaming up with the streaming giant for the show.
Hilary Weisman Graham will write the script and serve as showrunner. Diego Velasco will helm the series and co-executive produce. Meanwhile, Kohan and her “OITNB” team, Tara Herrmann, Blake McCormick and Graham, will all executive produce the series.
Sources told the Hollywood Reporter that “Social Distance” will explore life during the quarantine period amid the COVID-19 lockdown. The producers are reportedly planning to shoot found-footage style – where all or substantial parts of the movie are presented as video recordings.
“Our job as storytellers is to reflect reality, and in this new, bizarre, bewildering reality we are all experiencing, we feel passionate about finding connection as we all remain at a distance,” the producers said.
“We've been inspired to create an anthology series that tells stories about the current moment we are living through — the unique, personal, deeply human stories that illustrate how we are living apart, together. We are challenging ourselves to do something new: To create and produce virtually so that our cast and crew can stay healthy and safe.”
The producers added that the writers will not meet physically for the writing process and the director will direct the talent remotely. Meanwhile, the showrunner will run the production from her living room. Also, the cast will not only act, but also film themselves since there will be no camera crew to film them.
“The experience of social distancing is currently universal, but no individual story is the same. Through a broad spectrum of tales and moments, some seismic and some mundane, we hope to capture a moment in time. And we hope that ‘Social Distance’ will help people feel closer to one another,” the producers added.
Netflix gained 16 million new subscribers in the first quarter of 2020 due to the lockdown. It’s one of the few businesses that’s been enjoying a boost in revenue while many people are quarantining at home.
More projects are coming to Netflix. Just recently, Michelle Obama announced her “Becoming” documentary. In addition, Netflix recently won the bidding for Melissa McCarthy’s dramedy “The Starling.”
