Jennette McCurdy On Memoir ‘I’m Glad My Mom Died’: ‘I Hope It’s Meaningful’

Jennette McCurdy dropped a new promotional clip for her upcoming whimsical memoir, “I’m Glad My Mom Died.”

On Wednesday, the 30-year-old retired actress took to Instagram to upload a video of her promoting her tome while dressed comfortably inside her home. The promo seemed very straightforward as she mentioned the release details of the book at the start and ended the clip with an awkwardly funny banter with the cameraman on why she did not do any gimmicks to advertise the memoir.

“Hi! This is my book, ‘I’m Glad My Mom Died.’ It comes out Aug. 9, and it’s available to preorder now. Link is in my bio. … I think it’s really good. It’s funny, it’s sad … I hope it’s meaningful,“ she said at the start of the video.

Once she was done speaking, the person behind the camera asked her if she was done. McCurdy then awkwardly started to scratch her neck as though she was confused about what to do next. The cameraman quickly asked her if she intended to just be serious for the video and not do anything funny. This prompted the former “iCarly” star to say that her book is already funny, so there’s no need to overdo it for the camera.

Fans flooded McCurdy’s post with a mix of reactions. Many of them got her point on letting the book speak for itself and not doing over-the-top promotions.

“Sometimes you just gotta let the art speak for itself,” one wrote.

“The sheer irony of this video — humor,” another commented.

“I can’t wait to read the book, [Jennette]. I admire your strength and humor and resilience and authenticity,” a third user added.

According to the book’s official description posted on publisher Simon & Schuster’s website, “I’m Glad My Mom Died” is Jennette’s “heartbreaking and hilarious memoir” that tackles her struggles as a former child actor who had to deal with her overbearing mother on top of many other issues.

“Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, ‘I’m Glad My Mom Died’ is an inspiring story of resilience, independence and the joy of shampooing your own hair,” concluded the description.

In April, McCurdy unveiled the official cover of her book. It featured her awkwardly smiling while holding a pink urn with confetti coming out of it. Speaking on how she came up with the cover for her tome, she told Entertainment Weekly that it had something to do with the humor of the book.

“Confetti spilling out of an urn felt to me like a good way of capturing the humor in the tragedy, but I knew I didn’t want to go as far as throwing the confetti or jumping in the air with a huge smile on my face or doing any other kind of body language / facial expression that could read as flippant. Ultimately, I chose a facial expression that I think reads as sincere, a little pained, and a little hopeful,” she said.

McCurdy’s memoir will officially release on Aug. 9.
