Jennifer Lawrence Apologizes To Internet And ‘Hawaiian People’ After Joke About Sacred Rocks
“Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence could do no wrong in the eyes of most people—until she joked about sitting on sacred rocks in Hawaii. The actress, who was promoting her new film “Passengers” when she made the gaffe, took to Facebook Friday to issue her mea culpa.
The title read, “From Jen, to the internet.” It said: “I meant absolutely no disrespect to the Hawaiian people. I really thought that I was being self deprecating about the fact that I was ‘the curse,’ but I understand the way it was perceived was not funny and I apologize if I offended anyone.”
The blunder occurred on the BBC's “The Graham Norton Show” Monday. The topic came up when Norton talked about “cultural differences.” She knew immediately what he was talking about and giggled, “Oh God, how did you know about this?”
She explained: “We were filming in Hawaii. They were sacred rocks. And they were, I don’t know, ancestors. Who knows? They were sacred and you’re not supposed to sit on them because you’re not supposed to expose your genitalia to them. I, however, was in a wetsuit for this whole shoot. Oh my God, they were so good for butt itching!
It got worse when she talked about one of the rocks getting loose. “One rock I was butt scratching on ended up coming loose. It was a giant boulder and it rolled down this mountain and it almost killed our sound guy,” she said. “And all the Hawaiians were like, ‘Oh my God, it’s the curse!’ And I’m in the corner going, ‘I’m your curse.’ I wedged it loose with my a--.’”
It’s not the first time Lawrence told this story. She didn’t find out they were sacred until after the incident, she told “Live with Kelly and Michael” in 2013.
At the time, it was overlooked that her actions were insensitive to local custom. “In ancient Hawaii people believed certain stones were sacred for many reasons and often served as a physical reminders of the spiritual world,” Buzzfeed reported Thursday.
