Jennifer Lawrence Recalls Her Fears About Motherhood: 'What If I Can't Do It?'
Jennifer Lawrence has revealed she was afraid of becoming a mother when she was pregnant with her son.
"I made the movie ("Causeway") right before I got married. And then we had the pandemic. Two years later, I'm pregnant, we go back, and we make the rest of it," Lawrence told Viola Davis on Variety's "Actors on Actors" series.
Lawrence married gallerist Cooke Maroney in 2019 and welcomed a baby boy, Cy, in February. She named the baby after her husband's favorite artist Cy Twombly.
The "Hunger Games" star continued, "It was the scariest thing in the entire world to think about making a family. What if I fuck up? What if I can't do it? And I was so scared that I would fuck it up."
The actress found it "interesting" that her character in the movie somehow mirrored her fears and worries at the time she was filming it.
"Every day of being a mom, I feel awful. I feel guilty," she told Davis. "I'm playing with him and I'm like, 'Is this what he wants to be doing? Should we be outside? We're outside. What if he's cold? What if he's going to get sick? Should we be inside? Is this enough? Is this developing your brain enough?'"
In "Causeway," Lawrence played Lynsey, a retired military officer who comes home after a traumatic incident in Afghanistan. The movie follows Lynsey's struggles to cope with daily life and her desire to return to the army despite her injury.
Davis consoled Lawrence and revealed the scariest thing she ever experienced as a mom.
"Jennifer, I locked my kid in the car, and it was sweltering hot outside," she told the Academy Award-winning actress. "I had 50 million things on my plate. My daughter was in the back. She's happy, and I'm just so stressed out going to Target. I love Target. I walk out of the car, shut the door, and realize I don't have my keys."
Davis recalled throwing herself "on the concrete" and "grabbing the neck" of strangers as she panicked.
The "How to Get Away With Murder" star added, "And then what do I have in my hand? My phone. So the two men whose necks I've grabbed, they said, 'Ma'am, you just have to call 911.'"
Lawrence recalled a similar experience when one time, she drove without fastening the baby car seat properly.
She joked, "Good to know that we all almost killed our kids."
