Jennifer Lopez Broke Down After Oscars Snub, Reveals New Documentary
When Jennifer Lopez failed to get a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the 2020 Oscars, she put on a brave face, but secretly, she was heartbroken. A new trailer released for the Netflix documentary “Halftime” captures the full extent of the singer's sorrow over the snub.
Lopez had wowed critics with her role as a scheming stripper in “Hustlers,” which is why she was secretly devastated by the snub, New York Post reported.
At the time, Lopez had scored nominations at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards and Critics Choice Awards, and was expecting to be nominated for the Oscars, too, according to Entertainment Weekly.
In the trailer, which is a little over two minutes long, the actress can be seen sobbing in bed after being overlooked for the honor by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
“It was hard. I just had very low self-esteem. I had to really figure out who I was and believe in that and not believe in anything else,” she forlornly shared.
Later, she can be seen riling herself up while rehearsing for the Super Bowl show, emphasizing that she doesn't work "for an award," but rather "to connect with people and make them feel things" in the process.
"I'm trying to give you something with substance, not just us out there shaking our f---ing asses. I want something real," she said.
This is not the first time Lopez has spoken about her struggle with self-doubt in her career. “Everybody was like, ‘She can’t sing. She can’t dance. She can’t act. She’s just a pretty face or her butt is big,’ or whatever they were saying about me. I started thinking, ‘Yeah, that’s true,’ and it really hurt me for a long time," she told New York Post in 2018.
“Despite the hurt and the pain, I just kept going. I just couldn’t allow myself to let that become who I was,” Lopez added at the time.
Directed by Amanda Micheli, "Halftime" is set for a world premiere on June 8 at the Tribeca Festival in New York City. It will be out on Netflix on June 14.
