Jennifer Lopez has revealed that her son Max encouraged her to voice her opinion on the killing of George Floyd.
The 46-year-old African American was brutally killed by a police officer on the streets of Minneapolis. The police officer, Derek Chauvin, shoved his knee on Floyd’s neck and continued applying pressure even when the victim was saying, “I can’t breathe.”
Since then, several celebrities have come out on the streets to protest against police brutality, and Lopez was part of the demonstrations. Shedding light on what prompted her to speak out on the matter and join the protest, the 50-year-old singer-actress revealed that she first had a serious discussion with her kids Max and Emme about the Black Lives Matter movement.
Taking it to Instagram, the “On the Floor” hitmaker uploaded a short clip of her and partner Alex Rodriguez walking alongside a plethora of other protestors. In the caption, she explained that his 12-year-old son told her to speak out on the issue because she has a massive fan base and people would listen to her.
Lopez further stated that Emme and Max helped her in making signs for the protest.
“Today I had Emme and Max make me and Alex a sign for the protest. Max told me a few days ago, ‘You know mom since you have a following like some of my Youtube gamers and they ask us to support things and we do, you should do that for George Floyd,” Lopez wrote.
Later in the post, the Grammy-nominated artist also explained how the U.S. has been built on the belief of “freedom and justice” for all. She concluded her message by saying that people must “take a stand” against the injustices that prevail in the world.
“We talked about how if one person doesn't have justice then no one does. That this country was built on the belief of freedom and justice for all. We must take a stand for what we believe in and fight against the injustices in this world. So we continue to peacefully protest until there is change. #BlackLivesMatter #GetLoud #CallingAllMamas #TeachThemYoung @arod (sic)” Lopez wrote.
All four police officers accused in the case have been charged over the killing of Floyd, and they have also been removed from their positions.
In related news, Lopez recently revealed that she is a bit “heartbroken” because they had to postpone their wedding because of the coronavirus pandemic and admitted that she has “mixed feelings” about having to put it off.
“I am a little heartbroken because we did have some great plans but I am also like, you know what? God has a bigger plan so we just have to wait and see. Maybe it is going to be better. I have to believe that it will be,” Lopez said.
