Jets Head Coach Reaffirm Franchise's Support For Zach Wilson

New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh is sticking to his guns and is adamant that sophomore quarterback Zach Wilson will continue to be their starter for the foreseeable future despite his performance against the New England Patriots in Week 8.

According to SNY's Connor Hughes, Saleh said that the Jets "will stick with Wilson throughout this year—for better or worse" and that the only way they will ever switch things up is if he gets injured.

Wilson appeared to have complete ownership of the Patriots' defense as he dissected them for the first touchdown score of the game via an eight-yard pass from Wilson to tight end Tyler Conklin late in the second quarter.

However, the Patriots' secondary found their senses just in time as they logged their first of three interceptions in the dying seconds of the first half to prevent another scoring drive from the Jets.

With New York trailing 19-10 in the third, Wilson's pocket collapsed and as he made a break to his right, the Patriots' defense was coming to him and sought to fire the ball out of bounds, but instead threw it just short which allowed New England to get their second interception.

Wilson's decision-making woes continued to haunt him in the final frame as he threw a pass intended for Conklin, but instead overshot it right into the arms of a waiting Devin McCourty.

Jets fans were understandably frustrated with the situation since two of Wilson's three interceptions were careless mistakes by the young quarterback and many argue that their team is in a prime position to lock down a spot in the playoffs.

Despite some reacting negatively to the update from Saleh, Tyson Rauch of Talk Jets Radio floated a thought to calm down the fans.

"Saleh always protects his players publicly. Behind the scenes there has to be some type of conversation holding quarterback accountable for reckless play," he tweeted.

49ersZone's Evan Sowards agreed with Saleh's decision to stick with Wilson regardless of his mistakes.

"I mean I don't disagree. You spent a #2 overall pick on him. You might as well make damn sure he's not it before moving on. Doubt they make noise in the playoffs regardless," Sowards stated.

While Jets fans are hoping for a playoff appearance this season to end an 11-year drought, it appears that the organization is prioritizing their long-term future and Wilson's development over everything else.

Wilson will have an opportunity to regain the support of Jets fans against the Buffalo Bills in Week 9 on Sunday, November 6 at 1:00 PM ET.
