Jill Duggar’s Home Birth Plans Squashed; '19 Kids And Counting' Star Says Baby Israel's Delivery Didn’t Go As Planned
“19 Kids and Counting” stars Jill and Derick Dillard welcome their son Israel Monday, but his delivery didn’t go according to plan. Shortly after the couple revealed the first photos of their newborn, it became clear to fans of the TLC couple that their plan for a home birth did not come to fruition.
The images, which were posted to the Duggar family’s official website, showed new dad Derick, 25, sporting scrubs and Jill, 23, laying in a hospital bed. People Magazine later confirmed Jill did deliver in hospital. So, what happened?
“Not everything went as expected,” Jill said in a video announcing their baby’s arrival Tuesday. The new mom said she used the Bible to help prepare herself for the delivery. “We were reminded of the verse that the Bible talks about where man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps. We were encouraged by that,” she said.
According to the Duggar Family Blog, Jill and Derick were well-aware a trip to the hospital was a possibility. “The couple had been planning for a home birth but knew that could change if complications arose,” reported the site.
Despite Jill delivering baby Israel outside of her Arkansas home, the Duggars confirmed Tuesday evening that mom and baby were both in great shape. “Our Jill is doing wonderful and Derick seems to have a permanent smile on his face now!” Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar posted to their official website. The duo also revealed they’re huge fans of their grandson’s moniker, saying, “We love him so much already and we love his name!”
While Jill didn’t offer any specific details about her hospital delivery in her announcement video, she did take a moment to gush about her baby. “He’s just a handsome little fella,” she said while looking down as her son and smiling.
Jill, who is a student midwife, announced to People Magazine she was prepping for a home birth in February. “We’re getting the birth pool, things like that. We have a bassinet and a crib,” she said. She also shared that her sister, fellow midwife student Jana Duggar, 25, would help with her delivery. “My sisters, mom and Derick’s mom are available as errands runners,” she added.
