Jim Carrey Says He Would Have Sued Will Smith For $200 Million Over Oscars Slap

Jim Carrey was not impressed by Will Smith's actions at Sunday's 2022 Oscars ceremony and his industry peers' reaction to the incident.
On Tuesday, the "Batman Forever" star appeared on "CBS Mornings," where he weighed in on the surprising highlight of the 94th Academy Awards — Smith smacking Chris Rock across the face on stage over the comedian's bald joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, who lives with alopecia.
While Rock chose not to press charges against Smith following the incident, Carrey told Gayle King that he would have immediately filed a hefty lawsuit against Smith had he been the one slapped by the "King Richard" actor, whom he claimed "should have been" arrested.
"[Rock] doesn't want the hassle," the "Truman Show" star was quoted by Us Weekly as saying in the interview. "I'd have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million, because that video is gonna be there forever, it's gonna be ubiquitous. That insult is gonna last a very long time."
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to Variety that they are aware of the Oscars incident but said that Rock had "declined to file a police report" over the altercation.
"If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report," the police department said.
Carrey said he thinks that Smith could have found other ways to show disapproval for the jab, such as yelling from the audience, but the "Ali" star had no "right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words."
King, 67, argued that the incident "escalated" to that level, but Carrey didn't think so.
"It didn't escalate," Carrey said. "It came out of nowhere because Will has something going on inside him that's frustrated. I wish him the best, I really do. I don't have anything against Will Smith. He's done great things. But that was not a good moment. It cast a pall over everybody's shining moment."
Moments after he slapped Rock, Smith won the Academy Award for best actor. When he took the stage and delivered his acceptance speech, he apologized to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the audience without mentioning the comedian by name.
At the time, the audience gave Smith a standing ovation, something that "sickened" Carrey.
"I was sickened by the standing ovation," Carrey told King. "I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse. It really felt like, 'Oh, this is a really clear indication that we're not the cool club anymore.'"
Howard Stern also called out Smith on his radio show Monday, claiming that the actor has "real issues" and didn't think twice about hitting Rock. The radio host then defended Rock, saying that the comedian was a "gentle soul" and was "not a fighter."
Smith issued a public apology to Rock via social media Monday. The Oscar winner admitted he was wrong and out of line and that he was embarrassed by his actions
The incident is being investigated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
