Jim Mora Rumors: San Diego Chargers Contact UCLA Head Coach?
Add UCLA head coach Jim Mora to the list of college coaches tied to the NFL.
The former NFL coach and coordinator was reportedly contacted the San Diego Chargers to fill the vacancy left after Norv Turner’s departure, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Mora supposedly will stay with the Bruins, but the interest from an NFL team may give him a pay raise. UCLA went 9-5 and earned a trip to the Pac-12 Championship game in Mora’s first season.
Should Mora jump ship, the Times reported he would owe the university $3 million if he left before Jan. 16 and $2.5 million if he leaves after that date.
The 51-year-old was an assistant and coordinator in the NFL for more than 18 years before the Atlanta Falcons made him their head coach in 2004. In three seasons Mora had a 26-22 record with Atlanta, guiding them to the NFC Championship game in his first season.
He spent just one season with the Seattle Seahawks, going 5-11 and was subsequently fired.
The Chargers reportedly are deciding on their next general manager Wednesday, and will either promote personnel director Jimmy Raye or tap Indianapolis Colts personnel director Tom Telesco, according to the San Diego Union Tribune.
San Diego hasn’t been linked to very many coaches since they let Turner go last week. The Chargers reportedly had talks with Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians, and were also interested in Doug Marrone before the Buffalo Bills snatched him up over the weekend.
