Joan Rivers Celebrity Feuds: Comedian Fought With Chelsea Handler, Kim Kardashian And Jennifer Lawrence
Joan Rivers was never known to keep her opinions to herself. In fact, her fiesty rants were what helped her maintain a long and successful career in the entertainment industry. But they also got her into trouble with her fellow celebrities. Rivers, 81, died Thursday after several days of being on life support due to complications following throat surgery last week. The death was announced by her daughter, Melissa Rivers.
Over her career, Joan Rivers feuded with many stars, including most recently late-night talk show host Chelsea Handler, queen of reality TV Kim Kardashian and Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence.
Joan Rivers vs. Chelsea Handler
Rivers thought Handler could have handled her exit last month from her show on the E! network, also home to Rivers' "Fashion Police,” in a more professional manner. Rivers was widely considered a pioneer for women in stand-up comedy, but apparently Handler claimed to be the real trailblazer.
"She came out saying things like, 'I'm the first woman ever to do a late-night show.' She did this one day, and I followed her on the dais and I said, 'I guess everyone's forgotten the [Johnny] Carson show.' She never spoke to me again," Rivers recalled, during an interview with the Huffington Post in July.
Rivers was a guest host for Carson on "The Tonight Show" until she left to do her own talk show on Fox, which prompted a ban that kept her off the air on NBC for 26 years.
Even though Rivers tried to mend things with Handler, the younger woman apparently wanted nothing to do with her. "I went to her, I was at a party," said Rivers. "I said, 'Let's take a picture together because it'll make the papers.' She walked away," Rivers said. "I thought, 'Oh, you stupid girl.' It's a small business; we should all be friends."
Joan Rivers vs. Kim Kardashian
The Kardashian-Jenner family was one of Rivers' favorite topics in recent years. She’s called North West “ugly” and even spoofed Kim’s sex tape with Ray J. Eventually, the Kardashians just avoided the infamous comedian.
"Khloé and Kim were seated next to Joan Rivers, but they had them move her. [They] both don't want drama and can't fake it anymore with Joan, so they asked the staff to keep them separate,” a source told celebrity blogger Perez Hilton in May. “Apparently it was a hard task, because two other people have issues with her and also asked to be seated away from her. It was a juggling act keeping Joan away from everyone!"
Joan Rivers vs. Jennifer Lawrence
When “American Hustle” star Jennifer Lawrence condemned “Fashion Police” for endorsing an unhealthy standard of beauty, Rivers didn’t take kindly to the actress criticizing her show. The acerbic comedian called her a hypocrite and told her to “grow up,” her signature line.
“I love that she’s telling everyone how wrong it is to worry about retouching and body image, and meanwhile, she has been touched up more than a choir boy at the Vatican. Look at her posters,” Rivers told the New York Post's Page Six in December 2013.
