Jodi Arias Taken Off Suicide Watch Following Travis Alexander Murder Trial Conviction; Killer Goes Back To Jail

Jodi Arias was taken off suicide watch Monday, which she was placed under after telling reporters she’d rather die than get life in prison for killing her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander, according to a spokesman for the Maricopa County, Ariz., Sheriff's Office.

The 32-year-old Arias told Fox 10's Troy Hayden in an exclusive interview after her conviction: "I said years ago that I'd rather get death than life and that's still true today. I believe death is the ultimate freedom so I'd rather just have my freedom as soon as we get it."

The convicted killer was transferred from the psych ward back to the all-female Estrella Jail, the Associated Press reported, where she will stay on “closed custody status.” Arias has a cell to herself and is only allowed out once a day, for an hour, to make phone calls and shower.

The sentencing phase of her murder trial was postponed Thursday, but the courts haven’t given a reason for the delay. Sentencing is scheduled to start up again on Wednesday, when jurors will reconvene to decide if Arias should get the death penalty for brutally murdering her one-time boyfriend Alexander on June 4, 2008, in his suburban Phoenix home.

Though she claimed self-defense during her trial, prosecutors claimed Arias murdered Alexander in a calculated plan out of jealousy. She stabbed him 27 times before slitting his throat and shooting him in the forehead. The story of sex, violence and betrayal have helped make the case a headline grabber, even turning the site of the murder into an attraction for people obsessed with the case.

According to the Maricopa County medical examiner, Alexander did not die a quick death, which will reportedly figure in the prosecution's case for execution.
