  • The presidential hopeful shared his concerns about the 2020 elections and the lengths the Trump administration may go to win it during an appearance on "The Daily Show"

  • Biden's sentiment has previously been echoed by documentarian Michael Moore, who told Bill Maher cheating was the only way Trump could hope to win

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden warned President Trump may attempt to “steal” the 2020 presidential election in an appearance on “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.”

“My single greatest concern: This president’s going to try and steal this election,” Biden said in the Wednesday appearance. “This is a guy who said all mail-in ballots are fraudulent, voting by mail, while he sits behind the desk in the Oval Office and writes his mail-in ballot to vote in the primary.”

Biden said his concerns were exacerbated by the widespread problems in Tuesday’s Georgia primary. Among the problems: voting machines that did not work properly, leading to long lines outside polling centers that kept some voters waiting for hours. Some local activists alleged the most problems were reported in predominantly black communities.

Biden said his campaign was putting together a legal team to watch the 2020 election district-by-district for any suspicious problems. He then said if he wins the election, he has already considered the possibility of Trump refusing to concede and expects Trump to be escorted out of the White House by the U.S. military.

"I promise, I am absolutely convinced they will escort him from the White House with great dispatch," Biden said.

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany pushed back on Biden’s statement, accusing the presidential hopeful of peddling conspiracy theories during an appearance on Fox News.

“This president’s looking forward to November,” McEnany said Thursday. “This president’s hard at work for the American people. And leave it to Democrats to go out there and grandstand and level these conspiracy theories.”

Biden is hardly the only public figure to voice his concern about how the Trump administration may try to swing the 2020 election in its favor. Documentarian Michael Moore spoke with Bill Maher on the May 22 episode of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” echoing Biden’s concerns.

“The only way Republicans can win is if they cheat,” Moore said. “None of us should take him for granted. We need to behave as is if he will win a second term.”

Maher pointed to Trump’s comments about allegedly “massive voter fraud” associated with mail-in voting as a warning sign. He then said if mail-in voting was expanded, the U.S. would “never have a Republican elected in this country again.”

“That is actually what he said,” Maher said. “You’ve got to give it to this guy. He does speak his inner monologue.” Maher also has said he fears if Trump loses the election, he will refuse to leave office quietly.

Mail-in voting has become a point of contention heading into the 2020 elections due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As organizations like the Center for Disease Control and Prevention have promoted social distancing and people staying in their homes during the pandemic, some states have looked to expand mail-in voting to protect voters health by eliminating the need to go to polling locations. This has been met with severe backlash from Trump, who previously alleged there would be “massive voter fraud” if implemented. Experts, however, have said instances of vote fraud are rare.

Biden previously pointed to Trump’s hostility toward the U.S. Post Office as evidence Trump fears the potential results if mail-in voting is expanded for the 2020 election.

“He’s already trying to undermine the election with false claims of voter fraud and threatening to block essential COVID assistance if any extra funds go to the U.S. Postal Service,” Biden said during an April fundraiser. “What in God’s name was that about other than trying to let the word out that he’s going to do all that he can to make it very hard for people to vote.”
