Is This Joe Biden's Mansion? How President-Elect Purchased His House With Senator's Salary
KEY POINTS
- Joe Biden bought his Greenville, Delaware mansion in 1970s
- His salary as a senator at that time was $44,600 a year
- Biden sold the mansion for $1.2 million
President-elect Joe Biden’s mansion is being questioned. Did he really purchase the house using only a senator’s salary?
The controversial property is the 10,000-square-foot mansion in Greenville, Delaware that Biden acquired for $185,000 in the 1970s, per Reuters. In an attempt to tarnish the reputation of Joe Biden, critics called him out, saying he could not possibly afford such a huge mansion at the time when he was still a senator.
The president-elect, however, sold the mansion in 1996 for $1.2 million. Technically, he was once its owner but fast forward to 2020, it should not be a political issue. In the ‘70s, a senator only earned $44,600 annually, compared to the present when a senator makes $174,000 per year. When adjusted to current inflation rate, the price tag of the house is equivalent to $895,014.87 and the 77-year-old made a profit when he sold it.
The property was about to be demolished when "middle class Joe," stepped in to purchase it. He then spent a considerable amount renovating it. Aside from the controversial Delaware mansion, the former senator also owns a vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The six-bedroom property had a price tag of $2.74 million.
Biden and wife Jill actually earned more after his stint as vice president from 2009 to 2017. The couple earned at least $15 million from speaking engagements and writing books. The Scranton, Pennsylvania native has penned books such as “Promise Me, Dad” and “Promises To Keep,” among others. On the other hand, Jill, his second wife, makes around $100,000 per year as a college teacher, a report from Celebrity Net Worth revealed.
On the personal side, the Bidens have four children together: Hunter, Ashley, Beau, And Naomi. The latter unfortunately passed away in a tragic accident when she was just a year old with her mother and Joe Biden’s first wife, Neilia. The president-elect then married Jill Jacobs in 1977.
The soon-to-be president and first lady have an estimated combined net worth of around $7.9 million. The gap between the fortunes of Donald Trump and Biden remain wide as the former’s net worth is estimated to be around at least a billion.
Now that Biden is set to take office as the 46th president of the U.S. in January 2021, experts are expecting the critics to make allegations to undermine his credentials. But publications are spreading fact-checking reports that verify or nullify such claims for the interest of the general public.
