In an event called "Trick-or-Treating in the President and First Lady's Neighborhood," President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden handed out Halloween candy Monday to children and their parents at the White House.

Joe Biden was dressed in a long coat and baseball cap, while Jill Biden donned butterfly wings and a purple wig. There were 5,000 invited guests and the couple handed out chocolate kisses and candy bars. Children who attended dressed in a variety of different costumes, including dinosaurs, pumpkins, Spider-Man, astronauts and princesses.

Invitees included the children of local firefighters, nurses, police officers, administration officials and National Guard members.

The South Lawn of the White House was decorated with dozens of pumpkins and orange flowers, as well as spooky trees and house decorations. Tables of candy and decorations were also on the lawn. The candy was provided by the National Confectioners Association.

The event marked the first time Joe and Jill Biden were able to hand out candy at the White House for Halloween, as the pair was in Europe in 2021.

There have been Halloween celebrations at the White House since 1958, when then-first lady Mamie Eisenhower started the tradition.
