Joe Jonas On Feeling 'Destroyed' After Losing 'Spider-Man' Role To Andrew Garfield
Joe Jonas recalled losing the title role of the 2012 movie, "The Amazing Spider-Man" to Andrew Garfield, and revealed that he felt "destroyed" when he found out.
When asked about the process of auditioning and facing rejection on Wednesday's episode of the "Just for Variety" podcast, Jonas said, "I can name probably a couple. In the moment, you're destroyed or you're defeated. But you realize this person was brilliant."
The 33-year-old singer revealed that he was up for Spider-Man's role and was "so excited" about the prospect of it, but it was Garfield who eventually bagged the role.
"Obviously, he was the right one. But I remember that was a big thing at the time, going back for callbacks, and the director used to be a music video director," he added. "So I was like, 'I got an in here.' But you know what? I love the process of auditioning and putting yourself out there and having to prove yourself."
During the interview, Jonas was also asked if he ever got to wear the Spider-Man costume while auditioning to which the singer responded, "No, but I'm sure I had one that I would try on occasionally back in the day."
The singer praised his wife, actress Sophie Turner, who helped him to polish his skills and bring his talent out.
"When you have a wife like Sophie Turner, who is a phenomenal actress, the one filming you and directing you through it, you got to bring your A-game," he said. "She's my toughest critic."
Jonas noted that at times he is a "little nervous" but the 26-year-old actress has always been "super helpful" and supportive of him when it comes to acting.
"I feel like what a great acting coach to walk me through this," he shared. "And I do have her to thank. It was when I think I nail it and then she's like, 'No, you're going to have to do that again.' I'm like, 'S--t!' But that's what it's about.
"I'm glad that she gives me her honest opinion. That's what you need," he added.
Jonas and Turner got married in 2019. The couple welcomed a baby girl in July 2020.
On the work front, Jonas was last featured in a war movie, "Devotion," which came out in theaters Wednesday. Helmed by director J.D. Dillard, the flick also stars Jonathan Majors, Glen Powell, Christina Jackson and Thomas Sadoski.
