Joe Montana managed to thwart an intruder who attempted to kidnap his grandchild from a Malibu home over the weekend.

TMZ reported that a 39-year-old woman, since identified as Sodsal Dazell, entered the former San Francisco 49ers player’s home he was staying in on Saturday through an unlocked door around 5 p.m.

Upon entry, Dazell removed Montana's infant grandchild, who was asleep, from a playpen.

However, Montana and his wife, Jennifer, who were both at home during the incident, encountered her when she wandered to another part of the home. It was there that they confronted Dazell and wrestled their grandchild out of her hands.

Although she was able to flee the scene, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies were in the area for an unrelated matter, and someone from Montana’s home was able to flag down the authorities, who located Dazell a few blocks away.

Authorities arrested her and she was booked on burglary and kidnapping charges.

Montana is best known for his successful NFL career and the 13 seasons he spent playing as the quarterback for the 49ers. He retired from the NFL in 1994, after playing with the Kansas City Chiefs.

1. Joe Montana, Super Bowl XXIV
Joe Montana won four Super Bowls during his career (all with the San Francisco 49ers), but his last may well have been his best performance. Montana laced up that day against a stodgy Denver Broncos defense that was the NFL's best that season and proceeded to carve them up. Montana threw for 297 yards and five touchdown passes, and led the 49ers to 55 points in a 45 point victory, both of which numbers still stand. For his role as the greatest big-game quarterback of all time, Montana is #1 on our list. REUTERS
