  • The NFL legend is relieved that they managed to stop the woman, though they are "a lot more guarded"

Joe Montana has opened up about the shocking attempted kidnapping of his baby granddaughter at his home in Malibu, California, by a female intruder last year.

In September, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department said a female intruder entered Montana's home through an unlocked door, took his grandchild from her playpen and tried to walk away with the baby. They confronted the woman and a tussle ensued. Thankfully, his wife, Jennifer Montana, was able to get the child from the woman safely.

"She came into the room and, you know, just total shock when somebody was standing there with the baby and I tried to grab the baby, she moved away from me, and Jennifer just came from the other side and just snatched her away out of her arms and then chased her down the beach and off," the legendary NFL quarterback told Entertainment Tonight, recalling the scary incident.

Montana continued, "Luckily there were police right, like, 30 yards down the beach handling something else and they came and got her."

Montana went on to say that he never thought an incident like this would happen to his family, especially with all of them at home at the time. He added that they are relieved the woman didn't manage to take his grandchild in the end.

"We're extremely, extremely lucky that things didn't happen a little bit differently, that she didn't walk out that door with the baby," he said.

Sharing an update about his granddaughter, Montana said she is doing well at present and remains a very social and happy baby. But after the incident, they are more guarded when it comes to who they allow to get close to her.

Montana also spoke about his new Super Bowl commercial with Guinness. The football legend said his partnership with the brand felt natural because he "fell in love" with the beer more than a decade ago. The commercial is about what it means to be the "greatest of all time" and that the best is yet to come.

"This message in here is about finding the GOAT in all of us ... there's something in there, somewhere," he said about the commercial. "We've all had a rough year but there's GOATs in there."

Montana continued, Some people are going to struggle more and we're hoping that those people can find themselves and reach out and help those other people because that's what is part of being a GOAT. It's not just about how many touchdowns or whatever, it's, 'Can you make people around you better?' And you've got to be resilient, you've got to be willing to fight and come back, because that's what we have to do."
