Singer John Legend opened up about his friendship with rapper Kanye West, noting that it was politics that played a role in the two growing apart.

Legend and West used to collaborate frequently since 2004's "Get Lifted" album released. It marked the singer's debut album, which was produced by West.

"[Kanye and I] aren’t friends as much as we used to be,” the 43-year-old singer told "The Axe Files" podcast Thursday. "I honestly think because we publicly disagreed on his running for office, his supporting [Donald] Trump, I think it became too much for us to sustain our friendship, honestly."

Legend shared that when the 45-year-old rapper decided to run for the 2020 presidential election and also supported Trump, he couldn't support West. The "You & I" singer explained that this made West upset and since then, they are not close anymore.

"I wasn’t alone in that, but, you know, he [West] was not happy about that. And we really haven’t been close since then," Legend explained.

Despite the two not being close anymore, Legend praised his former friend for being himself.

"I think he’s been very open with who he is and his struggles with mental health. And he’s very real, honestly," Legend said. "So I think there’s not a lot about him that people don’t get… Like he’s been pretty upfront with his opinions, his struggles, all the things that he’s dealing with."

The singer added, "And I think what you see with him is pretty much what you get."

Legend and West last collaborated on a music video titled "One Man Can Change the World" from the music album "Dark Sky Paradise," which was dropped by rapper Big Sean in 2015.

On the personal front, Legend got married to model Chrissy Teigen in 2013. The couple share two kids - Luna Simone, 6, and Miles Theodore, 4. The 36-year-old model announced Wednesday on Instagram that she is expecting third baby with Legend.

Alongside the pregnancy announcement, she also shared a series of photos flaunting her baby bump.

West, on the other hand, got divorced from Kim Kardashian earlier this year. The rapper shares four kids with his former wife.
