John Mayer Goes the Miley Cyrus Route, Chops off His Luscious Locks After Katy Perry Split

In the dating world, post-breakup haircuts are typically reserved for the injured parties at the end of a long or particularly intense relationship, but John Mayer doesn't seem to have gotten the memo. The 34-year-old singer-songwriter, who recently parted ways with pop star Katy Perry, stepped out at a party at the SkyBar at the Mondrian Los Angeles on Saturday night to celebrate Mindy Kaling's new TV series "The Mindy Project," and debuted a drastically shorter new hairdo.

Mayer has been sporting grungy shoulder-length hair for the past 2 years, usually half hidden under a white safari hat. But he finally decided to go for a drastically more tame approach on Friday, when he had inches of his long hair chopped off at the Sally Hershberg salon in L.A., by Sally herself, reported People. Curiously, Mayer's haircut came just days after news broke that his romance with Perry had fizzled out, although Mayer was rumored to be the one who broke off the relationship.

Mayer and Perry, who never officially confirmed a relationship, were first linked on June 19^th when they were spotted at the Soho House in LA being "affectionate." The duo went on to appear together at parties all over LA and Mayer was even photographed by paparazzi leaving Perry's apartment in the early morning hours.

"There was major chemistry between them," said one partygoer at a pool party attended by Mayer and Perry, who spoke to Perez Hilton. "It was like they were on a honeymoon! John and Katy were all over each other. They were holding hands and kissing the entire time. Even in the pool, they stuck together nonstop."

But reports conflicted about how serious the couple really was. "They almost acted like they've been a couple for a long time," said a source for People. "It definitely didn't seem like a new relationship."

"John did a real number on Katy," added a source for RadarOnline.com. "She held off from his advances for the longest time, but he laid on the charm thick and promised her he was a changed man. She eventually gave in, fell head over heels for him and then - yep - once he had made his conquest, he dumped her."

However, other reports disputed such claims, claiming that the short affair was casual for both parties. "There isn't any emotional baggage with them," a source close to Perry told People. "They may go out again, even, just as friends." Mayer was the third person Perry has been romantically linked to since filing for divorce from ex-husband Russell Brand, back in December. Both Mayer and Perry have been spotted out in public, partying, since their split.
